32 Dogs Rescued from the Kentucky Floods
Disaster struck in Kentucky this summer: historic flooding cost dozens lost their lives, and washed away whole communities. Already overwhelmed animal shelters were deluged with lost and stray pets. Without any of the supplies to care for them, the situation was dire.
One of the benefits of air rescue is that even when the roads are washed away, there are airports above the flood lines where it is safe to land. So Amelia Air founder Dean and volunteer pilot Steve Wolfson loaded up a plane with over 200 pounds of donated pet food, plus crates, blankets, pads, leads & collars, toys and more to help flood victims who are also trying to care for animals. On the way home, they flew a dozen Kentucky shelter pets impacted by the floods to find bright futures with the Humane Society of Atlantic County, New Jersey!
Seeing the scale of the devastation, Dean and the Amelia Air Force wanted to do more to help. So only one week later, Dean & Katy returned to the flood zone to pick up another 20 shelter dogs from Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter, Morgan County Animal Shelter, Johnson County Animal Shelter, and Hillbilly Animal Rescue. The Humane Society of Atlantic County graciously offered to take in these animals and find them all homes to alleviate the burden on the shelters recovering from the floods.
We are proud to support the hardworking volunteers and staff. Shoutouts go to Nikita at Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter, Kathy at Morgan County Animal Shelter, Cynthia with Hillbilly Paws Rescue, Lynne at Safe Hands Rescue, Lanice with Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Karen at Floyd County Animal Shelter, and Jessie with Humane Society of Atlantic County. We are so grateful for the teamwork and cooperation that allowed us to pull off our two most recent Kentucky rescue missions. They all do so much to take care of abandoned animals and help see them off to a better future in New Jersey!
These missions received significant media coverage, including on NBC Philadelphia and the Hazard Herald - check out our new Press page for more Amelia Air news!
