A Huge Heart and a High Five
Grab your tissues, because this one is a total tear jerker: a story where many people came together to bring peace of mind to an elderly woman.
A good samaritan rescued 5 dogs from the streets of her city in Northern Mexico. After this loving dog mom outside grew gravely ill herself and became confined to a wheelchair, she worried what would happen to her little dogs if she were to pass away suddenly. Rather than leaving it up to fate in a shelter, she contacted Casa de Love rescue in California, who agreed to rehome her beloved pets while she still had the strength to ensure their futures.
Can you imagine being brave enough to part with your fur family, while facing down a serious health crisis? She put her animals’ happiness ahead of her own, and we are so grateful for her exemplary foresight, wisdom and courage. After learning about the situation, cofounder and West Coast pilot Petra leapt at the opportunity to help.
Now it was time for the next piece of the puzzle: Lisset, a dedicated rescuer, brought the 5 little dogs from Mexico into Southern California. For the next leg of the journey, Petra and David flew down to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport (KMYF) in San Diego.
After loading Ponchito, Cholito, Tonito, Maya, and Yali into the Piper Cherokee, the crew headed north to Casa de Love rescue! The flight was smooth as can be, except for one little hiccup: tiny Cholito, the smallest and oldest of the bunch, loved Petra & David - but he definitely didn’t like being inside his kennel!
Since there were two pilots in the plane to share the actual flying duties, they indulged Cholito’s wish to be closer to them - and once he was out of his kennel, boy did he have a blast! Whether checking out the view through the window or simply enjoying the ride from the comfort of a lap, Cholito is proof that old dogs can learn new tricks!
After a smooth landing, the team handed over the 5 little dogs to begin the final leg of their journey to Casa de Love and their forever homes. Check out the fun recap video of the high five rescue mission below!
The Amelia Air team is so grateful to everyone who took part in this mission, especially to their original rescuer in Mexico. She had a heart big enough to rescue them - and to let them go when she realized she would not be able to care for them forever. That is what we call true love.
UPDATE: believe it or not, Cholito is the last of his siblings who is still up for adoption! If you are anywhere near Redding, California and you have room in your heart and home for this extraordinary little dog, please check out his Petfinder listing.
